Jorge wanted to keep the original soil that he had on the property as his yard had been gardened in the past. REAL Food Volunteers dug up the sod in the space where Jorge's yard got the most sun. 

Denine's yard had very poor topsoil so REAL Food Volunteers built raised beds and brought in topsoil 

 The Garden that you could win:

The Rossland Food Group will build a vegetable garden to suit the lucky winner’s yard. The garden will be total of approximately 64sq feet in total (the equivalent of 2 raised beds 4ft x 8ft).

This is not a landscaping service for an entire yard but incorporating a vegetable garden into the yard that already exists

Requirements:

• A yard that has flat areas
• A yard with 8 hours or more of sun exposure in the summer
• A willingness to share your experiences (such as photos being taken of your yard, being available and willing to provide interviews and willing to have people view your garden)
• You will be in Rossland for at least 75% of the summer months
• A commitment to maintain and upkeep the garden
• A commitment to learn and attend the Rossland Food Group workshops

The Food Group will build the garden and provide:

• Consultation
• Basic landscaping services
• Soil
• Building materials
• Seeds
• Instruction and ongoing mentorship throughout the summer

It will not include:

• Gardening tools
• Irrigation equipment
• Excavation services beyond a shovel
• Fencing (this is something to think about if you have dogs or live in a neighbourhood that has dogs that pass through)
• A green house

How to enter the Lawns to Veggies competition:

1. A story stating why you would like the Rossland Food Group to help you build you a veggie garden. Creative submissions are welcome!

2. Photos of your garden/yard including your address.

Preference will be given to people who:

• Are vegetable gardening ‘rookies’ (you are still very eligible if you have tried in the past but you need some support)
• Enthusiastic people who show interest in continuing to garden beyond 2010
• People who plan to be on the same property for more than one year

The two lucky winners will be announced at the end of April 2010
