Community Garden

Building Gardens, Building Community: constructing the community garden 2010

The Community Garden is a place for the entire community to learn, participate and share information about gardening. We welcome everyone to come and stroll, picnic and participate in activities at the garden!

The garden is located at the North end of Jubilee Park (behind the high school). Construction of the garden was completed in June 2010. There are 14 regular sized beds (4x8) for rent to community members, two higher easy-accessibility beds, and a large community bed. Community garden members are responsible for their own beds and are expected to participate in some work parties and maintenance or watering schedules throughout the season.

Community garden 2011: If you are interested in a garden bed, please contact Rossland REAL Food to add your name to a waiting list  - Community Garden Coordinator Ami -  journey_outside@yahoo.ca

Funding
So far the garden has received $5,000 from the Columbia Basin Trust Environmental - Initiatives Program. We are very appreciative of their generous support. We also received money through the CBT Community Initiatives Program to pay for the insurance for the garden.

We recently received a very generous age-friendly community grant from the Union of BC Municipalities. A portion of this grant is designated for developing the community garden. A major portion of the funding is for programming that promotes age-friendly communities and healthy living. A part-time coordinator has been hired to consult with the seniors community in Rossland and develop inter-generational programming that gets seniors involved in the garden and related activities. Please contact Hanne Smith at jhanne@telus.net if you have any ideas or questions.

Soil
The soil in the raised garden beds is tested grade A top soil purchased from Biosustain Technologies Corporation (http://www.biosustain.ca/s_31.asp or 250-352-3650). The original soil on site has also been tested and has come back well below safe levels for arsenic and lead. Last fall we also added A LOT of composted cow manure that was purchased from Creston.

Plant donations
We are accepting donations of any shrubs, plants, bulbs, seedlings, seeds or trees. If you have something to donate, it can be dropped off at the garden site. Please let us know if you deliver something.
If you need something dug up, we are also able and willing.

Garden bed rental
